On June 9th, 2006, the 2006 World Cup begins with Germany vs Costa Rica and shortly following that, Australia's hopes (for only the second time in history) of proceeding beyond the group stages will be realised... or dashed. Not since 1974 have Australia's Socceroos qualified for the greatest sporting event on earth - the football World Cup. As a thoroughbred sporting nation (cricket, swimming, rugby union, rugby league, surfing...) the one area where it has, as a nation, underachieved is in football (read soccer) - the true World Game.
